Tapado's First Trip to the Lake

The Hubs....my best friend.

Last Monday we took the horses out to Woodward Reservoir near Oakdale, California for the first time. It was our thirteenth wedding anniversary, and what a better way to celebrate than to have fun with our horses!

Tapado had not been in the trailer for awhile, but he jumped in and was ready to go. When we arrived at the lake he was a little unsure and cautiously checked everything out.

The Hubs and Fauna had a great time!

It was a beautiful day and can't wait until next week to do it again!

Flora and fauna refer to plant and wildlife, respectively. The indigenous plant and wildlife of a geographical region is often referred to as that region’s flora and fauna. Picnic Basket Makeover - Before & After

Before

Years ago I won this picnic basket at Bunco.
Since, I already had two other wicker picnic baskets....never used it.
It was just taking up space, so I decided to give it a makeover and donate to a silent auction
the Peruvian Paso Horse Show in Vegas.

First, what I liked about it was it's unique horseshoe shape.
So, I decided to go with a horse theme for the makeover.

I used fabric designed by Laurel Burch ...."Mythical Horses"

...one of my favorites!

The gathering of all the pieces to match the fabric was fun....plates, cups, utensils, and napkins.
I made the napkin holders with covered elastic and snaps...
.My sewing is a little rusty, but duable.
I found everything on sale at different stores...50-75% off!
T.J.Max, Pier One Imports & Safeway.
The most difficult part was the taking it apart...
and finding the correct size rivets.

Actually, this project was so much fun that

every time I see a picnic...I get all excited and can't resist.

I've been collecting more baskets....

can't wait to see what they will look like!

My projects keep growing.....

Just been busy this summer with life, and time has just slipped away.

Plus, our computer crashed and everything had to be reinstalled.

I just trimmed the hydrangeas today, since the heat has fried most all the blooms.

A Gypsy Soul

I like the dress with my boots!

One of my favorite dresses. I love the flair and ruffles..
It's from the 1980's; but reminds me of a dress from
the early 1900's.

I've always had a "Gypsy " soul .....

and was wearing knee-high boots, leather, ruffles, suede and pearls
way back in the 1960's.
My grandmother took me to yard sales and I collected all kinds of treasures.

It's in my soul...can't help it.

It's all coming back!

This post comes late, due to technical issues with uploading pictures onto blogger. I've been extremely frustrated with the issue....for some reason instead of uploading all I get is little boxes with zero pictures.

Anyway, we spent Easter Sunday at my brother and sister-in-law's house in Angel's Camp. They have a beautiful home on the golf course at Greenhorn Creek.

BBQ Turkey, smoked ham, strawberry short cake and homemade ice cream.

It was great just all being together.

I found these flowers at "Trader Joe's" in Modesto on Good Friday.

The green ones are "Bells of Ireland" and pink "Mums".

I loved the two colors together for

Easter weekend.

Notice how they bells were going in different

directions the night I cut them and put them in water.

The the next morning they all perked up!

Totally cool and less than

$9.00 for the two bunches, plus they are

still looking very fresh today.

Fertilizer Friday/Flaunt Your Flowers - Parlor Palm Blooms - 3/4/11

This is our Parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans) which we've had for over fifteen years. I think it was about 18 inches when we first got it and has somehow survived and is currently around six feet tall. It's a Mexican species from the dense jungles where the environment is constantly moist and humid, never cold. The good thing for me is this palm is extremely drought tolerant, probably the most of all the indoor palms. It is a slow growing, small, single stemmed feather palm with very thin leaflets that spread laterally and somewhat upwards. I wipe the leaves off with a cotton ball dipped in milk which seems to work, so I keep doing it. Two years ago I almost killed it by putting it outside on the back patio for a few months. It has taken a long time to bring it back and has found a great home in the corner of our kitchen, which has tons of light during the day. Currently it's sprouted little blooms with pods, which I guess means it's happy.

New School Prayer & New Pledge of Allegiance

A friend of mine forwarded this to me today, so I thought I would share.....

Since the Pledge of Allegiance and

The Lord's Prayer Are not allowed in most

Public schools anymore

Because the word 'God' is mentioned.....

A 15 year old school kid in Arizona wrote the attached

NEW School prayer: "New Pledge of Allegiance"

For this great nation under God

Finds mention of Him very odd.

If scripture now the class recites,

It violates the Bill of Rights.

Scottie Shortbread Cookies

This is my Scottish Terrier cookie mold which I've had for several years.

I finally decided to bakesome shortbread cookies.

The mold is very large and took half the cookie recipe.

I think next time I'm going to make them a little thinner, because they took

forever to make...It made two cookies one at a time!

He turned out very cute...even looks like Scottie fur!

It's a Connor cookie!!

So, what's better than chocolate with shortbread?

I found this old basket in the garage and added some new plants and moss for color on the front porch bench.

Just got these this morning....ready to plant!

The sun is finally out!

Our yard doesen't have much to offer as far as color these days.

Whole Wheat Bread for Bread Machine

Bob's Red Mill Recipe

I've been searching for a healthy whole wheat bread recipe for sometime. I found this recipe on the back of Bob's Red Mill 100% Stone Ground Whole Wheat Flour and decided to give it a try. The recipe calls for "Gluten" which I found at a local health food store. My first attempt at baking whole wheat bread earlier this week was a disaster. I won't mention the movie star's name who's book I got the recipe from, but I will never use it again. It was like a big hard rock and I had to be chip it out of the bread machine. It was very sad......

My Rock Bread

The recipe below was my second attempt, I was a little skeptical because of the "rock bread" failure, but I must admit that it turned out pretty good.

Whole Wheat Bread - One Large Loaf (1 1/2 lb.)

1 1/2 + 2 Tbsp Water

3 3/4 cups Whole Wheat Flour

2 Tbsp Dry Milk Powder

1 1/2 tsp Salt

2 Tbsp Canola Oil

2 Tbsp Sugar

1 1/2 Tbsp Gluten

1 Tbsp Molasses

3 tsp Active Dry Yeast

Add all ingredients in the order suggested by your bread machine manual and process on the basic bread cycle according to the manufacturer's directions.

The Hubs enjoyed fresh whole wheat bread with peanut butter and jelly.

If you slice the loaf into 12 slices...each slice would be
worth 4 Weight Watcher Points Plus.

Weight Watchers Chicken with Lemon & Capers

I used boneless, skinless chicken thighs & breasts.

My new cast iron roasting pan I got for Christmas. I tried this recipe

for the first time and it turned out very well.

Weight Watchers

Sauteed Chicken Thighs

with Lemon and Capers

Cooking spray

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 tsp black pepper

1 1/4 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs,

about 8 thighs

1 cup canned chicken broth

2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

1 1/2 Tbsp capers

3 cups string beans steamed or roasted (Side Dish)

Coast a 12-inch nonstick skillet with cooking spray, set over medium-high heat.

In a small bowl, combine flour with pepper; sprinkle over chicken.

Brown chicken in a single layer in prepared skillet until golden on bottom, about 6 minutes;

flip and brown on second side, about 4 minutes more.

Remove chicken from skillet; set aside (if necesssary, brown chicken in two batches.)

Pour broth into skillet and scrape up any browned bits with a wooden spoon.

Return chicken to skillet, cover, and reduce heat to low, simmer until heated through,

about 3 minutes. Stir in lemon juce and capers; heat for 30 seconds.

(At this point I popped lid on my new cast iron roaster and put in oven @325 for one hour)

Yields 2 chicken thighs, 3/4 cup string beans, and about

1 1/2 tablespoons sauce per serving.

5 Points Plus Per Serving

Yummy!

The Hubs loved it!

Winter Flowers - African Violets & Snapdragons

Needed some color today....it's foggy and wet outside.

A little Rosemary sprig.

More light and fertilizer this year ....and look at this beautiful large bloom.

Amazing what a little TLC will do!

I love this dark blue...but will need to repot this one soon after the blooming is done.

Rainbow Bridge for Calidad

Our friend Nicole lost her beautiful Peruvian horse Calidad today. After a couragous 10 day battle to live... the little filly is gone. Nicole loved her so much and was planning on showing her this coming year. It saddens my heart to see her hurting from this loss.
Calidad was a gorgeous little three year old horse who's life was far too short.

May God give Nicole strength she needs to cope with this loss.

'The Unicorn at Bay'

The Stirling Palace Tapestries are the result of a unique project. A series of seven medival tapestries are being re-created, using both centuries-old craftsmanship and new technology. The original tapestries, which depict the story of The Hunt of the Unicorn, are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The replicas are being woven by the renowned West Dean Tapestry Studio, both at Stirling Castle
and at West Dean in the south of England. We were fortunate to be able
to see these completed recreations during our tour.

The re-created version of 'The Start of the Hunt',

the only tapestry in the set that does not feature the unicorn.

The re-created tapestry, 'The Unicorn is Killed and Brought to the Castle'.

I took these pictures on our tour of Stirling Castle during our visit to Scotland in June 2009.

They say there are many unanswered questions surrounding the Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries,
Historians have debated their origins, their symbolism, and whether they were made together or assembled from two or more sets.

The Stirling Palace Tapestries are being woven as one strand of a project to bring the colour and splendour of the Scottish Renanissance court back to Stirling.

They are displayed in the Queen's Inner Hall at Stirling Palace.

(My favorite Christmas Drink)

Irish Coffee...the drink of music and magic...

was conceived by Joe Sheridan at Shannon Airport.

Stanton Delaplane discovered it there and brought it back to San Francisco.

The Buena Vista serves it, just as it's sereved in Shannon,

using a select Irish Whiskey blended from column stilled and pot stilled whiskeys.

I use Bushmills Whiskey for my Irish Coffee.

Located on Hyde Street (at beach)

1. Fill glass with very hot water to pre-heat, then empty.

2. Pour hot coffee into hot glass until it is about three-quarters full. Drop in two sugar cubes.

3. Stir until the sugar is thoroughly dissolved.

4. Add full jigger of Irish Whiskey for proper taste and body.

5. Top with a collar of lightly whipped whipping cream by pouring gently over a spoon.

Enjoy it while piping hot.

Here we go again....it's twelve days till Christmas! I've been sick for the last few days...some how caught a terrible bug this last week and it has really set me back. Yes, I did get a flu shot this year, which reminds me that everytime I get a flu shot, I seem to get sick that year. I 've been taking it easy for the last few days and will try to catch up this coming week. Anyway, it's given me some time to read the new Weight Watchers Points Plus plan inside and out...and I'm really excited about Points Plus. I love the new "Power Foods" and I think I'm off to a good start.

Today I started thinking about the twelve days of Christmas, and looked up December 12th in the book "Simple Abundance" by Sarah Ban Breathnach. The day is labeled "A Partridge in a Pear Tree" as in my title with the quote by Mary Sarton. Sarah is one of my favorite authors because I relate to most all of her stories, plus she's an easy fun read. If I could write....I would certainly write with like her. I sometimes go to her books for a daily dose of inspiration and usually find something. The book takes you on an organized walk through the year, day by day which I enjoy. For today she suggests instead of giving your loved ones lavish gifts which will blow your budget, you instead give them the Right Stuff....which will be a one-size-fit for all gift: the gift of yourself...

Trout Fishing in the Sierra Snow - Outdoor Wednesday

We are very fortunate to live less than one hour from this beautiful fishing spot in the Central Sierra Nevada mountains just off Highway 108 east of Sonora, California.

Highway 108 continues along Deadman Creek to the Sonora Pass and drops into Highway 395 on the eastern side of the Sierras. Just before Dardanelle is Clark Fork Road which will take you along the Clark Fork up to Sand Flat campground. We took these pictures on our fishing trip last month.

The Upper Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River contains both rainbows and browns.

It is heavily stocked by Department of Fish & Game (DFG) with about 30,000 rainbows annually.

The Hubs enjoying the day!

The Clark Fork of the Stanislaus River is a small stream with runs and riffles. It is heavily used by campers and is stocked by DFG with about 13,000 rainbows annually.
For wild trout, you can hike in at the end of the road into the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness.

Highland Creek which is the main headwaters for the North Fork Stanislaus offers good fishing.

The outlying portions of the stream contain wild trout in the 9-12 inch class.

The river consists of deep pools, riffles, and runs.

The Spring runoff makes it difficult to fish until mid June. Usually, fall brings great fishing.

The roads are closed now, this was just after the first snow.

No fish caught this day, but we enjoyed our hot chocolate and picnic lunch.

Just being in the beauty of nature is very relaxing.

Someday I hope to learn to fly fish!

Design & Glue - Step Four

It's time to get out the hot glue gun and start designing. I'll start with the
"Blue Moon" Pumpkin

Select leaves for base.

Glue and keep building your colors.
My glue gun is probably 20 years old...and
still going strong! Yikes

Tools needed to clip stems, etc.

Start adding and glue as you go around the stem.
For some reason, I like feathers this year. So, I added a few.

Sometimes you try things and they just don't work, like these grapes.
Too large, so I used smaller ones.

I liked the green bird even though the
red one had more contrast.

I used several all natural dried leaves and pinecones for
this pumpkin and artifical gords, nuts and berries.

Added a little bling!

I usually buy my decorations after the season, so that I can take advantage

of 50 & 60% off sales. I store them for the following year.

Silk flowers and leaves,

Sunflowers, miniture corn, grapes, mums, wheat, nuts, or whatever you want on your pumpkin.

Remember each pumpkin is different,

so you have to just start putting your ideas together.

Cleaning, Buffing & Shining Pumpkins - Step Two

Pumpkins - Left to right

1) Musquee de Provence (Muscate de Provence) Heirloom Pumpkin. (Left) Cucurbita pepo

these pumpkins are used by chiefs around the world. They have orange flesh that is very sweet and flavorful. From Southern France.

2) Blue Moon - Cucurbita Maxima. (Front) Graysih Blue with a thick yellow orange flesth. Perfect for decorating or carving. From Australia.

3) Jarradale - Cucurbita pepo - (Back) Gray pumpkin which with yellow-orange flesh that is sweet, dry, and stringless making it suitable for baking or pies. This variety will store for months. Stores for months.

I've had these stay fresh until February. Not sure where they originated.

I'll start with these three beauties. Make sure

you place them on a soft cloth to prevent bruising. I usually place a soft dish
towel on the bottom of the sink to protect the pumpkin's delicate skin.

Scrub with a soft toothbrush making sure to get all the dirt from the cracks and creases.
My mushroom brush works very well for this process because it's so soft and gentle.
Make sure to clean around the stem.

Clean the underside too, making sure all dirt is removed from around the bottom.

Be very careful not to cut or damage the skin.

Buff with a terry towel.

Then buff with a micro towel.

Notice how these buff out like they were waxed!
All natural, just a little elbow grease
for the Blue Moon and Jarradale.
I usually spend 15 minutes buffing each pumpkin.

The Fairytale however won't buff out so nicely
and needs a little help to shine.

This is the natural shine.

So, I use a acrylic crystal clear
gloss clear spray to
help it out.

And we have shine!

In Search of Pumpkins - The Gathering Process - Step One

I've been asked by a few fellow bloggers to show how

I make my pumpkin centerpieces.

So.....

I've been gathering pumpkins for a week or so to make some centerpieces

I found in these in Turlock and they all fit in the back of my truck.

I'm not selling any this year, these are for myself and relatives.

This one will make a great Halloween pumpkin - - He was free.

This one is from Safeway...I bought two like this...one for Colin and one for Aiden.

It weighs around 40 lbs...and cost $4.99. Aiden's was a little larger than this one, and I delivered it to him last week. Safeway was having a sale....buy one and get one free....perfect price and a fantastic bargain.

Colin's dad will be carving this big guy on Halloween!

This Fairytale pumpkin is from Sue's barn on Highway 120.

Another Fairytale pumpkin which will make a beautiful centerpiece.

This one is my favorite...I love the touches of pink and orange.

Colin's First Pumpkin Patch

He wants to touch and feel everything.

It's amazing to watch him discover everything.

He's only been walking for around one month,

and walking on dirt was very different.

The fresh roasted corn was simply wonderful!

When my daughter lived in Carlsbad we visited this beach in La Jolla, California. Jenni wanted me to see the seals and water....both were amazing. We hiked down and out to the end of the cement wall,

and that's where I took these above pictures.

A Little History....

Casa Beach, also known as the Children’s Pool, is a tiny beach in La Jolla, California that is famous for its colony of harbor seals. The site is a huge tourist attraction and a favorite spot for locals to watch wildlife.

In 1931, Ellen Browning Scripps donated money to build a sea wall in order to create “a safe place for children to swim”. To allow the artificial construction, the State of California transferred the land to the City of San Diego in a Tidelands Grant of 1931, dedicating Casa Beach to human recreation. Back then, seals were commercially hunted by fishermen who viewed these animals as competitors for fish. Hunting was so extensive that many harbor seal populations abandoned traditional haul-out areas.

Casa Beach has been home to the seals for centuries; the rock the sea wall was built on was called “Seal Point” by the first settlers to the area. Seals made their comeback in the late 80’s and early 90’s as a result of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the federal law passed by Congress in 1972.

Last summer when we visited Scotland, I looked everywhere for little Scottie dog souvenirs, but they were a very rare commodity. We found three little black beanie Scotties at the airport in Edinburgh...one for my granddaughter Ashley, one for Miss Jean, and one for myself. I was expecting to find little Scottie dogs everywhere in Scotland, but it just didn't happen.

It's Saturday Morning and I Missed the Rooster Party!

I'm just a gimpy old hen!

Well, it's Saturday morning and last night's first of the month "Friday Night Dinner" went well with fifteen in attendance. Everyone brought something to contribute to the menu,which was full and very tasty... Baby back ribs, salads, grilled corn on the cob, baked beans, and red velvet cupcakes!

Anyway, I realized this morning that I had missed the Rooster Party! Fortunately, I got everything done for the dinner party last night, but forgot to post my roosters. I will post some quick pictures of my roosters. Earlier this last week my back went out and I've been gimping around for days. I did manage to do some Ombudsman duties, but missed my Thursday volunteer gig at KP. So, you see I am just a gimpy old hen and I do apologize.

Last night was so much fun though. Our new little addition to the family, Aiden Christopher was here for the first time. Erika's mom Virgin who is visiting from Puerto Rico joined us, and since yesterday was Miranda's birthday we celebrated her 26th to boot. Great Grandpa Al even made it back from his camping trip, and got to see and hold little Aiden for the first time. It was a celebration.
